The Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium (C.S.C.O.) was started in 1903 by Jean Baptiste Chabot, an eminent Syriacist who had received his training at the College de France. Syriac is an Aramaic language that was an important literary language across the Middle East from the second to eighth centuries. It was the liturgical language of Syriac Christianity used for the spread of early Christianity and was influential in the development of Arabic. Coptic is the most recent version of ancient Egyptian that is the current liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox Church. With Dr. Chabot, four other Orientalist scholars participated in the early work and publication of the C.S.C.O.: Baron Carra de Vaux of the Institut of Paris, Louis Cheikho, S.J. Of the University of Beirut in Syria, Dr. Ignazio Guidi of the Sapienza University in Rome, and Dr. Henri Hyvernat of The Catholic University of America (CUA). The purpose of the series was to make available the works of the Eastern Fathers whose writings were in Syriac, Arabic, Ethiopic, Coptic, and Armenian. Each text of the series was published in two parts: (1) a critical edition of the text and (2) a modern translation.
In 1912 Dr. Henri Hyvernat drafted a proposal stating that The Catholic Universities of America and Louvain should assume responsibility for publishing. It was approved that same year by the rectors of both the universities. At this time Dr. Chabot was appointed the Secretary General of the C.S.C.O. and Dr. Henri Hyvernat was appointed the Chairman.
In 1913 Dr. Hyvernat made arrangements with J. P. Morgan to publish the Morgan Coptic manuscript collection as part of the C.S.C.O. in a subseries to be called Series Morganiana.
In 1928 Hyvernat resigned as the Chairman of the C.S.C.O. and the director of Coptic section due to poor health. However, he still devoted much time to the series and made himself available for consultation on the Coptic section. In June of 1928 Dr. Romain Butin was appointed Chairman of the C.S.C.O. by Rector Thomas Shahan of the CUA.
Various publishers have been associated with the C.S.C.O. The original publisher was the Poussielgue firm in France. At the time of the transfer to the two universities in 1913, the publishing firm of Otto Harrassowitz was selected. The current publisher is Peeters in Leuven and the C.S.C.O. is under the direction of Professor Bernard Coulie.

Within the Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum collection (1911 - c. 1939) there are three series of documents: Series 1: General Documents, Series 2: Administration of Corpus and Series 3: Correspondence.
Series 1: General Documents includes proofs of circular, sample title pages (including the Morgan Series - see folder 9), and letters sent to the clergy and laity announcing the transfer of the C.S.C.O. to the Catholic University of American and Catholic University of Louvain.
Series 2: Administration of Corpus includes minutes of meetings (1926-1928, 1930, 1936), communications between The Catholic Universities of Louvain and America, expense reports, reports of the Rectors councils for 1912 and 1923, the official reports and correspondence of the General Secretary, J. B. Chabot , (see folders 17 and 18). Also included is some correspondence of Hyvernat which was incorporated to this series in 1945 by Rev. Patrick Skehan. Of special note are the letters of the Bishops in response to the transfer of C.S.C.O to the two universities (see folder 23).
Series 3: Correspondence concerns individuals and institutions purchasing copies of or obtaining subscriptions to the C.S.C.O.

The Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium Collection was donated by Rev. Patrick Skehan in the Semitics Department/ICOR of CUA on May 11, 1951.
This collection was originally processed using a hand-written inventory that arrived with the collection. Although items were numbered consecutively throughout most of the inventory when the collection was processed, there are items that were added later or did not receive a number and have been labeled [unnumbered] when the finding aid was converted to EAD.
Processing completed on September 14, 1999 by A. Agnew. EAD markup completed in April 2006 by Cathey Dugan and Jordan Patty.
