Historical Note

Bishop John J. Keane served as the first Rector of the Catholic University of America from 1887 to 1896. Bishop Keane was born September 12, 1839 in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland. After emigrating to the US as a child with his family, he spent his early life in Baltimore, Maryland. After completing studies at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, he was ordained in 1866. He moved to DC and spent the next decade at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Washington, DC.

In 1878, he was named Bishop of Richmond, Virginia. In 1885, he was asked to join a committee charged with examining the feasibility of creating "A Catholic University for America." He eventually was chosen to be the University's first Rector (President) in 1887 and remained at the helm of the University until 1896. He served the University during what was to be a rough and crucial first decade of establishment and growth.

After his years of service to the University, Bishop Keane was invited to Rome, where he was appointed Archbishop of Damascus. In 1899 he returned to the United States where he served as Archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa from 1900 - 1911. Bishop Keane died in 1918.

This album was given to Bishop Keane by the "Professors of CUA" as a token of their appreciation for all of his work, upon his leaving the University in 1896. The album is still intact and was professionally bound. The album contains property stamps and cataloging materials which were added by the Columbia College (now Loras College) Library in Dubuque, Iowa, which is where the album resided until being donated to CUA in 1996. Bishop Keane probably donated the album to Columbia College during his tenure as Archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa, from 1900 to 1911.

Scope and Contents

This album consists of 28 pages containing 47 photographs of the University administration, faculty, buildings, and grounds as they appeared ca. 1896. The album was compiled by the CUA faculty as a farewell gift to Bishop John J. Keane, when he stepped down as the University's first Rector (President). There are a total of 47 images (ranging from 5.5 x 4" to 8.5 x 6.25) in the album. The album was professionally bound and is in very good condition. Each leaf in the album is made up of heavy bond paper that appears to have held up well over the years. There are end pages at both the front and back of the album. There are two bookplates in the front of the album dedicating the album to Bishop Keane and a hand written index to all photographs secured to the inside of the back cover. The first 5 pages contain portraits of the hierarchy of the school administrative officers, after which there is a photograph of a campus building on one page with the following page containing 3-5 portraits of CUA Faculty Members. The images all appear to have been taken sometime before September of 1896. They are all black and white with the exception of the image of the Very Reverend Msgr. McMahon (image 3); which is most likely the result of detailed hand painting.

Bookplate 1 reads: "To the Most Rev. John J. Keane D.D. Archbishop of Damascus. From the Professors of the Catholic University. In grateful memory of their association with him in the foremost undertaking of the Church in America." There is another bookplate with the message in Latin: Bookplate: (Latin) IOANNI - IOSEPHO - KEANE - ARCHIEPO - DAMASCI, QUI - MULTIS - EXANTLATIS - LABORIBUS, MAGNUM - CATHOLICORUM - AMERICANORUM - LYCAEUM, A - FUNDAMENTIS - EREXIT, REDDITIBUS - INSTRUXIT - VIRTUTIBUS - ORNAUIT, DOCTORES - ET - ACADEMICI, AMICITIAE - PIGNUS - GRATI - ANIMI - SIGNUM.
