Searching for books

Use the WRLC Libraries Catalog to search for books.

Search using keywords

Keyword searches pull up books that use the keywords in their titles, subjects, authors, table of contents, etc.

To use keywords successfully, use quotation marks around phrases and use the word "and" between concepts.

  • "real estate" and finance
  • housing and statistics
  • planning and cincinnati
  • "city planning"
  • "urban planning"

  • "smart growth"
  • "seaside debates"

Search using subject headings

Subject heading searches use prescribed vocabulary to target a specific idea.

Examples :

  • City planning-Cincinnati
  • Regional planning
  • Transportation
  • Planning-Developing countries

Other WWW sources

A word about using WWW search engines

Using search engines like Google or AltaVista is often an interesting way to do research. However, you should remember to critically evaluate all pages that you find in this manner. Not all web pages are authoritative or accurate. Web pages are different from books and articles and other published forms of information which are usually edited for accuracy, authority and value.

When looking at a web page, ask yourself the following questions :

  • Who created this webpage? Is it clear who is responsible for the contents of the page?
  • Are sources of information cited?
  • Is the information provided as a public service?
  • Is the organization's bias clearly stated?
