The Rare Books and Special Collections Department is located on the second floor of Mullen Library in Room 214.

The department is open to all CUA and WRLC students, faculty and staff, as well as to visiting scholars. Normal hours of service are 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday. Other hours may be arranged by appointment and an appointments are required for use of collection material. The telephone number is 202-319-5091.

All visitors to the department must sign in the departmental visitor log. Before using departmental material, researchers will be required to read and sign the department's Procedures and Rules for Users. Researchers may download a PDF of this form in advance and bring the completed and signed form on their first visit. With the exception of the reference collection, all departmental material is located in closed stacks and must be retrieved by departmental staff. Staff does not page books less than 30 minutes before closing. Researchers on a tight schedule are urged to request material in advance of their visit so that staff may have it ready upon their arrival.

Researchers may find cataloged material listed in the WRLC Catalog of the Washington Research Library Consortium, or in the main card catalogue of the university library. Many of the books in the department remain uncataloged and readers should consult department staff for assistance in finding materials located in card catalogs or databases of individual collections.
