Research on the WebGoogle ScholarDoing research requires finding what exists in the bibliographical universe and locating a copy in the most expeditious manner possible. CUA Libraries subscribes to many abstracts, bibliographies and indices that will assist you in tracking down citations to important scholarly works (ALADIN). To complement our subject databases, Google Scholar allows you to "search across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations." Google Scholar should be used to complement our subscription resources and not replace them. Google Book Search and The Million Book ProjectMany titles in the public domain (published before 1923) can be searched through and downloaded in their entirety through Google Book Search. Books published after 1923 are searchable with Key Word in Context (KWIC) display. The 'Find this book in a library' link searches the OCLC WorldCat for a copy of the nearest owning library. Note that CUA Libraries subscribes to the more robust version of WorldCat through ALADIN. Google Book Search Bibliography is available for research. The Million Book Project has surpassed one million books digitized and available full text on the web. Most of the books are in the public domain with approximately 50,000 copyrighted titles available too. Custom Google Web SearchThere are many scholarly web sites that may be utilized for doing research. The librarians at CUA have evaluated and added these web sites to this search engine. The advantage of using this search engine is that you will receive fewer but better quality results than if you were to use the regular Google Search Engine. Since one of Google's algorithms is based on the most visited and popular web sites, these results may not be the most scholarly. There are many websites available to assist you in evaluating information. Two excellent sites are Evaluating Web pages: Techniques to Apply & Questions to Ask and The BEST Search Engines at the University of California at Berkeley.
